About this place
Known as the Peixe River or Porto Seguro River, the Buranhém River rises in Minas Gerais and travels 148 kilometers to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean at Porto Seguro. It is the water source from which water is drawn to supply towns in Bahia’s far south. The river is at the center of Porto Seguro’s tourism triangle, encompassing the districts of Arraial da Ajuda, Trancoso and Porto Seguro’s central urban seat. “Buranhém” means “sweet wood” in Tupi. This place is part of Rede Bem Bahia’s Regional Guide and helps visitors understand the natural, historical, cultural and scenic diversity of the Costa do Descobrimento. The experience changes according to the time of day, tide, weather, calendar and means of access. Plan your visit with travel, length of stay and current rules in mind, and confirm operational information before leaving.
