About this place
The Festa de São Sebastião is one of Caraíva's most distinctive community traditions, celebrating the village's patron saint with faith, samba and remembrance. The cycle begins in January with the removal of the mast from the Caraíva River mangroves and its transport in procession, followed by the raising of the mast, Mass, baptisms and the January 20 procession through the streets and along the riverbank. The tradition may continue until June 24, when taking down the mast closes the cycle alongside the São João celebrations.
Getting there
Reach the Nova Caraíva parking area via the southern coastal road route and cross the Caraíva River in community-operated canoes. Inside the village, travel is on foot along sandy streets; follow local directions to São Sebastião Church and the procession points.
Things to do
Respectfully follow the retrieval and transport of the mast, community samba, Mass, baptisms and procession, according to each edition's program. Observe how the festival connects church, river, mangroves and square, and ask permission before taking close-up photographs of participants.
Travel tips
Confirm dates and times with City Hall and the community, as the program may change. Wear footwear suited to sand, bring only essentials, respect religious and residential areas, and arrange your return crossing before the end of the evening.
